A record-breaking year

Exploring history where it happened

The last year has seen a record-breaking number of children and young people discover our sites, stories and collections through our education programmes. From primary pupils making their own paints inspired by the artists of the Golden Age of Spanish Art, to secondary pupils learning about religious change and tolerance as they explore the Faith Museum, nursery pupils stepping into galleries for the first time in their lives, to college students learning vital skills through work placements.

Over 2023-24, we’ve engaged:
• 116 nursery students
• 2,582 primary students
• 3,978 secondary students
• 932 College students
• 92 University students.

Moments of discovery

Across 196 visits, over 7,700 people have been engaged, spanning our sites, from the Deer Park to the Mining Art Gallery, Auckland Tower to Auckland Castle, the Faith Museum to the Spanish Gallery and more. Pupils have explored stories of the transatlantic slave trade, local legends, the importance of faith and the environment, the Second World War and a plethora of bespoke sessions spanning subjects including Maths, PE, Art, English, RE, Leisure and Tourism and History.

Even our hotel, Park Head, saw visits from college students learning more about the world of work, whilst out community venues in the Market Place were places where they could learn about urban regeneration.
None of this would be possible without our team, our colleagues and our amazing volunteers.
We’ve already got big plans for the year ahead…
