BISHOP AUCKLAND TWEED AND TOILE PROJECT
Gillian Arnold and Northern Heartlands worked together with the people of this region to capture the thoughts, stories, drawings and paintings from a vast cross section of the community.
These findings inspired the creation of thematically linked tweed and repeat pattern fabrics that are unique to the Bishop Auckland area and its heritage.
BISHOP AUCKLAND TWEED
The colours and patterns of this tweed is loaded with symbolic meaning associated with Bishop Auckland and surrounding areas.
Gillian worked with a group of women from Bishop Auckland, who shared the essence of this area and it’s proud resilient people.
The black lines in the pattern reveal the railway and mining industry along with the coal found in this fuel rich land. The two blues in the check shout about the Bishop Auckland football team. Blue and yellow represents the Bishop of Durham Crest.
Shades of green through the weave reflect the beautiful rugged landscape. The earthy rust relates the brick making and the Oakland’s characteristic of this region.
Through its colours and patterns this tweed talks about the fuel rich land, the industrial strength, the pride and resilient people and it’s beautiful rugged landscape.
Now this tweed has found itself on many products where visitors can buy and remind themselves of the story of Bishop Auckland, as communicated by its people. Expressing a range of contemporary and timeless souvenirs.
