Weardale Railway Ride the rails of history

We acquired Weardale Railway in 2020 because we wanted to preserve an exciting and important part of North East’s history. Soon, the ticket office will be open and the whistle polished: all that’s needed to depart is you!

How to find us

You’re invited to join us for 18 miles of engineering heritage, as well as stunning views of the gorgeous County Durham countryside.

The railway is part of the Stockton to Darlington line, (famous for having the first passenger rail service in the world) which will celebrate its 200th anniversary in 2025. In years past, the railway dominated a large part of Bishop Auckland and served as a testament to the importance of the town on the wider area and indeed, the country as a whole. We hope to begin running services again in summer 2021 – at the moment, we're undertaking some urgent repairs to bridges along the route.

As the railway begins to thrive again, we’re looking forward to starting new heritage and event services on the line in the run up to its special anniversary, so keep your eyes peeled for event news and tickets. All aboard!
