SPANISH CONSUL GENERAL VISITS BISHOP AUCKLAND Wednesday, 4 March 2020

Spain’s Consul General visited Bishop Auckland this week to see some of the work underway across County Durham to bring Spanish and Latin American art and culture to the world.

Dr Ignacio Cartagena Núñez, Spain’s Consul General in Edinburgh, took a tour of Auckland Castle, where he saw the paintings of Jacob and His Twelve Sons by celebrated Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbarán.

He also called at The Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art, run by Durham University in partnership with The Auckland Project, and enjoyed a presentation on the Spanish Gallery, which is currently under construction nearby.

Speaking of his visit, Dr Cartagena Núñez said: “I had the pleasure to visit a part of my own country in England: the twelve paintings of Zurbarán in Auckland Castle are a reminder of how strong, rich and powerful our relations are, in particular in the field of culture and education.”
