Francisco de Zurbarán’s collection of masterpieces, Jacob and His Twelve Sons, have hung in Auckland Castle for over 250 years, serving as a little piece of Spain in the North East. These stunning works of art from the focal point for a new gallery of Spanish art opening in Bishop Auckland's Market Place in autumn 2021.
A glimpse of the Spanish Golden Age, in the heart of Bishop Auckland
Stirling Prize-winning architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios have taken two vacant buildings steeped in historical and local significance, and transformed them into a striking Gallery. The former bank and school overlooking the Market Place will become 15 exhibition areas spread over three floors, displaying a wide range of paintings with particular emphasis on the 16th and 17th century – the ‘Golden Age’ of Spanish art.
Designed to take you on a tour through the history of Spanish art while examining its impact on modern culture, the Spanish Gallery also includes a dramatic top-lit double-height space for a breathtaking and immersive experience.
The Gallery will also contain a conference suite, retail area, reading rooms, and a restaurant.
The Zurbarán Centre
We couldn’t have created this incredible celebration of Spanish art without our collaboration with The Zurbarán Centre for Spanish and Latin American Art. Also based in Bishop Auckland Market Place, the Centre is run by Durham University in partnership with The Auckland Project and is the only UK research centre that is devoted entirely to Spanish and Latin American art and visual culture.
