So you want to get right to the heart of local history, make lasting memories, and all with the unbeatable feeling of having given something back to your community? Well then good news, you’ve come to the right place!

We love people who are as passionate about the history and heritage of Bishop Auckland as we are – they make everything we do possible and worth it. We’re immensely proud of our home, not just because of its history, but also its community. It’s a privilege to work alongside volunteers who want to bring the local heritage to life and they’re the reason The Auckland Project can keep doing its great work.

Why volunteer?

By becoming a volunteer, you’ll be playing an integral role in bringing the rich history and culture of Bishop Auckland and County Durham to life, championing it to visitors from all over the world. We live in such an incredible place, it needs people like you to let everyone else know.

Volunteering is the perfect opportunity to learn new skills, make friends and connections for life, and experience something new every day. We’re an affable, supportive community and we want to see everyone involved having a fun and rewarding time.

What’s in it for you?

Apart from experiences and cherished memories that we’re sure you’ll carry with you in life, we want your volunteering experience to be as enriching as possible for you. We provide bespoke training for all roles, discounts with local suppliers, and a personal volunteering page to track and get feedback on your volunteering journey.

Importantly, we like to think that The Auckland Project is a friendly, community driven group, and a lovely place to spend your time. We want to give you even more reasons to get enthusiastic about local history and have a great experience.

Don’t just take our word for it

Hear from some lovely folks about their experience with The Auckland Project and why our relationship with volunteers means so much to us:

Volunteering is one of the most satisfying things I have ever done and being involved is a joy

I’ve loved learning about the history of Auckland Castle Volunteering here is a wonderful experience. The camaraderie and friendship is amazing.

I love Bishop Auckland, and being retired I wanted to fill my time in a useful way. I love meeting and helping people and job satisfaction. My role has helped me meet the public and inform them of the wonderful history which is in and around Bishop Auckland.

I work in the gardening department, which I find enjoyable and fun. Every week you do something different and there is an exciting vision. For me, the most interesting thing about volunteering with The Auckland Project is variety and working with a leader who is an expert in his area.
